Knitting  sucks less than I thought.  Hooray!

Turns out, I was doing it backwards. My mom laughed at me and then showed me what I was supposed to be doing, and I am finding it much easier now.  My fingers won't be sore tomorrow the way they were on Sunday.

Hehe, I wasn't doing ANYTHING right. Instead of taking the stitches from the front, I was going around the back to pick them up.

Can I attribute it to being a lefty? Seriously, I have no idea. Learning to knit from a book is just not the way to do it.

actually you can. Most books teach it by right hand, and depending on who taught you it could explain everything.

How are you learning? My mum gave me some needles and wool a while ago and taught me how to knit basic stich, but I'm not very good at it and so far all I'm doing is making random squares. But my MIL bought me a knitting book for Christmas last year and I'm dying to get started and try and learn a few more things so I can actually make something useful!

I just bought a book at Walmart and started from there. I think I am going to start an actual project tonight -- with very low expectations. I want to be able to churn out beautiful things, but for now I think I'll just settle with churning out actual things.

Well Jess, I hope your first project turns out better than mine. I knit a sweater for my DH in 1970. I even did raglan sleeves. The sweater looked beautiful. Oops, the neck was about the right size for a cat, not a human!! We still laugh about that sweater. I did get better at knitting. Now I'm involved in a project where we knit caps, scarves, and mittens for children and adults in shelters. We also give every school a supply for those cold days when there are always kids who left their mittens home.

So funny about the sweater!! My first project is off to a start, but I'm not sure it's a good one. We'll see.

If I ever get to the point of being able to make things that other people would actually want to wear, maybe you can tell me what organization you're donating through. I would like to do something like that.
